Private text analysis and writing tools

Counts, reading and speaking time, Flesch readability, cleanup, and case conversion for English drafts. Each tool does one job in your browser, and the text is not uploaded.

Count

  • Word counter

Count words in a draft, with characters, sentences, and both time estimates beside the total.

  • Character counter

Count visible characters with and without spaces, plus UTF-16 units and UTF-8 bytes.

  • Sentence counter

Count sentences and the average words in each, with the abbreviation rules stated up front.

  • Paragraph counter

Count paragraphs separated by blank lines, and see when a hard wrap is not a new paragraph.

Time

  • Reading time

Estimate silent reading time at 238 words per minute, or set the pace you actually read at.

  • Speaking time

Estimate how long a script takes to say at 150 words per minute, with room for a slower or brisker pace.

Readability

  • Readability checker

See Flesch Reading Ease and the Flesch–Kincaid grade together, with both formulas and a short-text warning.

  • Flesch Reading Ease

Calculate the 0–100 ease score, read the band it falls in, and see the 1948 formula with your numbers filled in.

  • Flesch–Kincaid grade

Calculate the U.S. grade-level estimate from the 1975 Navy formula and read what that grade does not mean.

Clean

  • Remove extra spaces

Collapse double spaces and tabs, trim lines, and reduce extra blank lines without joining wrapped sentences.

  • Remove line breaks

Unwrap hard returns from a PDF or email paste, with the choice to keep real paragraph breaks.

  • Remove duplicate lines

Keep the first copy of each repeated line, in order, with an option to ignore letter case.

Case

  • Uppercase converter

Convert text to uppercase with English (United States) case mapping, and see when the length changes.

  • Lowercase converter

Convert text to lowercase with English case mapping so headings and pasted titles match the rest of a draft.

  • Title case converter

Capitalize the first letter of each word. Small words stay capitalized too — this is not Chicago or AP style.

  • Sentence case converter

Capitalize the start of each sentence and the pronoun I. It lowercases the rest and does not fix grammar.

Questions people ask

Does TextStats upload what I paste?

No. The counters, timers, readability scores, cleaners, and case tools run in your browser after the page has loaded. The draft is not sent to TextStats or to Google Analytics, which only counts visits. The privacy policy explains what a host may still log when your browser requests the page itself.

Why is this not one big word counter?

A word total, a character limit, a sentence count, a reading time, and a Flesch score answer different questions and use different rules. Putting each one on its own URL lets the page say exactly what is counted, what is estimated, and what the tool will not do.

Are the readability numbers official grades?

No. Flesch Reading Ease and the Flesch–Kincaid grade are published formulas. The syllable step on this site is an English estimate, not a dictionary or a school placement. Short passages move the score a lot.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-in and no saved library of drafts. If you close the tab, the text in the box goes with it. Copy the result first if you want to keep a cleaned or recased version.
